As wildfires rage on in California, home and business owners must consider the risks fire can pose to their properties. Fire is unpredictable and hard to contain once it gets going, meaning one must do all they can beforehand to prevent the worst.
Though you cannot completely fireproof your commercial landscape, there are a few things you can do to help mitigate the spread of fire and make it easier to contain and control if the worst happens.
Do Your Research
Always try and emphasize the use of more fire-resistant plants. While there is no such thing as a fireproof plant, some species are better developed to deal with heat and drought conditions, making it harder to burn.
Most deciduous trees and shrubs are fire-resistant because they don’t retain as much flammable material like twigs and dead leaves. They are also mostly free of volatile waxes and oils that are prevalent in the stems of some plants. Doing your research and focusing on these types of plants goes a long way to planting smartly.
Keep it Clean
Good maintenance not only keeps a lawn healthy, but also helps fireproofing as well. Clearing your lawn and plants of dead leaves and twigs limits the amount of flammable material that fire can latch onto. Dead leaves and materials are often dried out due to a lack of water and become exponentially more flammable, especially if allowed to gather.
Make an effort to keep your gutters clear and your trees and shrubs properly thinned out so materials aren’t allowed to gather as easily. Also, make sure brush and dried grass are removed from the perimeter of your lawn so you have a bit of a fire barrier.
Always keep your property hydrated. A hydrated lawn slows down the buildup of dead materials and makes it a little harder to burn. That said, if your area is currently enduring a drought, be sure to follow your city’s water regulations. It’s imperative that water is properly conserved when a wildfire hits.
