With summer winding down, it’s time to adjust your lawn care routine to match the changing climate. The temperature will be dropping and days will be getting shorter. For this reason, your lawn will need to adapt with the season.

Early fall is actually a great time to work on your lawn for the future. Though it won’t grow at the same rate compared to the spring and summer, the temperature is still mild enough to help foster future growth. Here are a few things you can do to help your lawn last during the winter and come back stronger in the spring.

Fall is a great time to check in on your lawn’s health. We can help keep it growing.

Grab Some Air

Fall is the perfect time to aerate your lawn. Proper aeration gets much needed oxygen into your lawn and helps kickstart any fertilizer or seeds you laid down for the future. Digging a few holes about 2-2.5 inches deep will let oxygen flow into the root system. Be aware of spacing though as holes should be about 3-5 inches apart.

Seed the Future

Speaking of seeds, now is about the right time to spread some on your lawn. Placing fresh seeds over the course of the year helps keep your lawn healthy and growing regardless of season. A thick lawn also makes dealing with things like crab grass and clover leaves easier to deal with.

Seeds can be purchased according to your preference of grass. Consider whether you prefer wider or slimmer blades as well as the type of grass that does best in your local climate. Due to milder temperatures, new grass will pop up after a few weeks with proper watering.

Check Up Time

Lastly, do a soil test to see where your lawn stands in terms of nutrients. This is important for determining your lawn’s health and which adjustments to make before seeding different plants. After the test, you’ll be able to determine which fertilizer you’ll need, if any, so you can feed your lawn according to its needs.
